Chasing my 69 year old Dad - Intro

October 24, 2017

Follow my journey as I try and beat my Dad at 5k!

That's right, it's out there! I can't beat my 69 year old Dad! A personal trainer and a running coach and cannot beat him!!

Now this is as much as an accolade to him as it is a criticism to me! He's run all his life, and it's awesome to see him still smashing people half his age...even if one of those is me!

Although my father has run all is life, after slightly falling out of love with running, my London Marathon forced me into regular running and so he followed and got back into running!

We've done many a parkrun together, and I often get comments from him like;

"I'll just run with you instead of pushing hard today". To which I think to myself  'Cheers Dad!'

"Come on, try and stay on my shoulder"

He looks so fresh after running a parkrun with me, that in the past,  friends have asked him if he actually took part, to which he replies "I only jogged round with Jon!"

We both did our 50th parkrun together and are on track to do our 100th together over Christmas  - not bad considering that we both have different "home" parkruns.

Anyway, the TABLES ARE TURNING!!

I'm embarking on my 5k2PB programme!

Historical performance comparison

Being a data geek here are some graphs to help you understand the above:

This graph shows my father and my parkrun times. I'm in orange and he's in blue.  (Ignore the slow time - can anyone guess what happened there?? Answer to follow ..)

As you can see, there is clearly a trend of blue performing better!! The time has come to change that trend!

My Performances

The following graph, focuses solely on my performances. I've removed the outliers, when I've volunteered as tail runner/walker and when supported others around (the answer to the above 'what happened there' question btw!)

As you can see, since 2010, there hasn't been much improvement!  The April 2017 improvement, is when I trialed the programme pre-launch.

I now feel like I owe it to myself to train properly, to see what I can achieve!

Can I catch him?

Follow my journey here to see how I get on personally and most importantly whether I can catch my 69 year old Dad.
