Cardiff parkrun insights

October 28, 2017

Due to a number of events held in our amazing city we have recently used 2 alternative courses to ensure parkrun can go ahead.

Over the  9 weeks (19/08 - 15/10) we've used:

Blackweir - 5 times

Llandaff Fields - 1 time (by Cathedral Road)

Pontcanna Fields 3 times (by Riding stables)

Below we look at how the difference courses affect attendance and performance!

Attendance - Which course attracts the most parkrunners?

There are definitely other factors to take into account other than the course e.g. Other events (Cardiff half marathon was 1st Oct so slump on the 30th Sept) and the weather etc.  However there does seem to be a trend of a dip in attendance when using other courses.... maybe it is familiarity, maybe it is a case of not knowing and turning up too late to get to the start, even though there is normally a Marshall there!  On that note next week's (4/11) parkrun is in Pontcanna fields!

CONCLUSION: Blackweir is the most popular course.

Return Runners

Out of the 5536 completed parkruns over the 9 weeks, there were 2471 unique* runners, the following shows the split of how many of them did multiple courses.  See below for how the runners who have done all 3 have performed.

Interestingly only 3 people ran all 9 weeks and only 13 people ran 8 weeks.

*Unique based on my assumptions!

Performance - which course suits which runner?

The analysis below looks at runners' performance.   The following gives some insight into the differences! Which is the fastest?

The following shows the comparison of those hitting PB's versus those that don't! I was surprised to see that on average over these 9 weeks, 13% of all runs resulted in a PB.  As you can see it is clear that Pontcanna produces fast times for more people, and Llandaff fields, has the total opposite affect.    As I mentioned on twitter the other day, I love the Pontcanna course, but then at my pace, laps and corners don't hinder me too much!! There are other factors that may skew this, e.g. by experience of runners (the less parkruns generally means the more likely to PB!, the more first timer means less PBs!

CONCLUSION: Pontcanna fields produces the most PBs

Performance of the front runners....

The following focuses on the fast guys!  It show the winners time (blue line) and the average of the top 10% that day (orange line), so that if we had a freakishly quick winner it would smooth the line!)

CONCLUSION: For the fast guys, LLandaff fields is the slowest course, with Pontcanna and Blackweir producing very similar performance, the average top 10% times is only 8 seconds different, with Pontcanna being the quickest.

Performance of the rest of the field...

The following looks at the average of the whole field (orange line) and the average of the slowest 10% (after removing slowest 5% for equivalent reason above to ensure smoothed trend).

CONCLUSION: Pontcanna suits the rest of the field more than the other courses.  The Llandaff slowness seen by the fast guys is also seen here, the slowest average was in Blackweir, however Llandaff was second slowest, only 5 seconds slower.

Amazingly the fast and slowest Blackweir average differs by over 1 minute!

Out of the runners who ran all 3 courses in the 9 weeks, this shows the split of which course was quickest for them.

CONCLUSION: This supports the above that Pontcanna suits the average field but only just, as stated under the fast runners Blackweir produces similar performance.   Llandaff is definitely the toughest with it suiting only 5% of those that ran each of the 3 courses!
